US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that there is currently no effective international system capable of resolving disputes that arise between countries like India and Pakistan. Commenting that the United Nations is not functioning to its potential, he noted that the current global framework is failing to resolve major problems across the world. Speaking to reporters in New York on Wednesday, Rubio remarked that the international system has expanded beyond its original scope and is interfering in matters outside its focus while simultaneously failing to resolve major conflicts. He added that several heads of state expressed similar views during the UN General Assembly sessions.
“It would be good if there were a functional system capable of resolving tensions arising between India and Pakistan,” Rubio said, while also referencing the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. He clarified that when international mechanisms fail to operate properly, every nation inevitably prioritizes its own interests. Reaffirming Washington’s stance, he stated that the US will not compromise on its national interests and will always give priority to American interests over the international system. Rubio’s comments come in the backdrop of recent statements by US President Donald Trump, who once again claimed in his UN speech that he personally intervened to stop the conflict between India and Pakistan last year.
However, India has consistently maintained a different position regarding the ceasefire. New Delhi has made it clear that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both armies communicated directly to reach an understanding on stopping the hostilities. India firmly reiterated that there was no third-country mediation involved in the process.
